We hope you will join us on November 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Marlboro Chamber of Commerce office for our Lunch N' Learn if you want to learn more about the South Carolina Guardian ad Litem program in our area, how to volunteer as a Guardian ad Litem and more!"The Guardian ad Litem program was founded in 1984 by Cass Elias McCarter. Her vision was to protect the children of South Carolina through the advocacy of volunteer Guardians ad Litem. The first program started in Marlboro County in August of 1984 and within five years the program was operational in almost every judicial circuit. Beginning July 1, 2010, every child with an abuse or neglect case in South Carolina Family Court has been appointed a volunteer Guardian ad Litem to be their advocate.GAL volunteers are appointed to represent the child's best interests and make recommendations to the court. Judges respect GAL volunteers and consider their recommendations when making decisions.GAL volunteers get to know the child, and everyone involved in the child’s life, including family, teachers, doctors, social workers, and others. They gather information about the child and what the child needs. Their recommendations to the court help the judge make an informed decision about a child’s future. GAL volunteers provide a stable presence in a child’s life, remaining on each case until the child finds a safe, permanent home.Volunteers should be at least 21 years old, have a clean criminal record, no previous DSS case history, and be able to contribute four to five hours a month for a child."This event is free for Chamber members and only $5 for potential Chamber members and community members.
